We have begun work on our E-Folios and are excited to share them with our classroom community!
The purpose of E-Folios:
These E-Folios are rich learning experiences for our students! They will serve as a record of their third grade year, a motivational tool, and a powerful ongoing way to reflect upon their work. As we continue to work on E-Folios, students will be asked to blog about their work. They will write about their inspirations, learning process, and reflect upon successes and areas that could be improved.
Our classroom community will become an important part of our students' learning this year. We are asking you to be a viewer and reviewer of their work, too! I will be viewing and commenting on work, as well as other QAE staff members. I encourage you to share E-Folios with family and friends and as them to be viewers as well.
For security, student E-Folios will be password protected when accessed through our classroom website. The password will be "treehouse." Please feel free to share this password with any community member that you would like to view your child's E-Folio, as well!
Commenting Guidelines for Viewers:
I encourage you to view your own child's work, as well as others! After you view, it is important to leave a blog comment. Leaving a comment alerts the student that you reviewed the work and gives them valuable feedback. This is an amazing motivational tool that also helps them to question their work, extend their thinking, and reflect about their learning process.
When leaving a comment, think about how you can give praise while encouraging reflection. Mr. Jeffery lead a great workshop last year that focused on highly-effective commenting. Here is an excerpt he shared with me that I'd like to pass along:
" When commenting on student work, it may be helpful to start with one of the following stems:
-I wonder...
-I really like this because...
-This makes me think about/ this reminds me....
-I can tell you worked hard because...
-I noticed....
Try to avoid stand alone phrases like "Good job," "Way to go," or Nice Work." While these comments are meant well, the goal is to provide feedback that invites us to think about something, consider a change, or move in another direction."
Positive comments that encourage, help children feel capable and connect us closer to each other are incredibly powerful.
Asking questions that require students to think and answer back are so powerful, as well! This will facilitate higher-level thinking as well as ongoing, two way conversation with our students!
Challenge:
I challenge you to take 10-15 minutes this week to view your student's E-Folio, as well as one other. If you have time to view and comment on others-great! The goal is for every student to have at least one piece of work viewed and commented on by next week!
It is incredible to watch as students read comments about their work. E-Folios work to build both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and allow students to continue thinking and reflecting about their work after it has been completed. E-Folios provide the opportunity for students to showcase their work and to see it valued by their community!
Students' work on E-Folios:
So far the students have posted two published pieces of writing, their personal narrative and their Harris Burdick fiction story. They have also uploaded pictures of the artwork they have created with Ms. Meg this year!
Students are having fun personalizing their website home pages by writing a bit about themselves and adding pictures. Mr. Jeffery has coached them about copyright policies. it is great to post pictures they searched for using the Weebly search tool, however, simply copying and pasting photos off the web without permission may be violating copyright laws. I really encourage kids to add photographs of themselves, friends, and family, or to upload photographs they have taken themselves! This is far more powerful and meaningful.
I encourage kids to work on their E-Folios at home. They are welcome to personalize and upload writing, art, or other pieces of work they have made at home and are proud of!
We do ask kids to keep a few elements of their E-Folios sacred. We have asked them not to change the theme of their site, or to change the site's title.
